Biden was no surprise, but not exactly a unifying pick. Or an interesting one. Obama should have ignored his ego and his advisers bad advice and picked Hillary- if he had this campaign would be locked up- instead, it’s going to be a nail-biter and totally up in the air- it’s Obama’s to lose.

Yes, the uninteresting part worries me almost as much as the rest. He’s squishy on gay rights and reproductive rights, though better than some who were under consideration. So I am wondering what can be done to get the two of them to appeal to the constituencies we know Obama needs to win. It’s more than a wee bit scary to think of the alternative.

A huge majority of Americans think this country is going in the wrong direction and most blame GW Bush. Perhaps what Biden can do is constantly hit McCain over the head with the fact that he has voted with Bush something like 97% of the time. In other words, it would be four more years of Bush policies.

Biden also can try to reach out to the people who supported Clinton- I mean REALLY reach out in a meaningful way- of course Obama should too, but so far he hasn’t done anything on that front.

Moving to the right is a big mistake- most Americans support key democratic policies on health care, choice, judicial nominees, Medicare, workplace protections and the environment- they have to constantly remind the electorate of that. The GOP always runs a very personality-oriented campaign while also playing on people’s fears. And anyone who thinks race isn’t an issue, has their head in the sand- the question is, how much of an issue will it be?
