Unsought Leadership: How Anita Hill Called Out Workplace Harassment and Changed Everything

If you’re a woman over 40, you’ve probably had an Anita Hill Moment. That aha when you realized those suggestive comments, undesired gropes, and surreptitious ass-pats you’d long endured in the male-dominated workplace had a name: sexual harassment.
If you’re under age 40, you probably grew up knowing not only about sexual harassment as a concept, but also that it is a prosecutable offense you shouldn’t put up with it for one minute. You’ve probably had training about it in your workplace, and know how to report it safely if it rears its ugly head. So whether or not you realized it, you’ve had your Anita Hill moment too.
All because of unsought leadership.

And discontent with the president is growing on the House side, too: In his retirement statement Thursday Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-Calif.) ripped the Obama White House for what he called inaction on the housing foreclosure crisis. Will President Obama be a political albatross for Democratic congressional candidates in 2012?
My Answer: As a lawyer, President Obama should know the first rule of debate: whoever defines the terms is most likely to win it. His failure or perhaps intentional reluctance to do that is the real albatross weighing down members of Congress and causing him to lose the extraordinary voter enthusiasm that swept him into office…

We Believe Anita Hill 20th Anniversary Party
More than 500 people came out for the 20th Annual I Believe Anita Hill Party.
For the past 20 years, S. Carolina women have been honoring Professor Hill’s contribution to women’s right to be free of sexual harassment in the workplace. This year, for the 20th Anniversary, Professor Hill for the first time attended the party (on October 20) and the following day she was a keynote for the annual S. Carolina Women Lawyers Association Conference.

At the party, Professor Hill was on hand all evening to shake hands, sign copies of her new book, Reimaging Equality: Stories of Gender, Race and Finding Home, and make remarks.
The audience cheered as she encouraged them to keep up the fight for equality in the work force and vigilance against sexual harassment.

The administration’s decision was another setback for the new law, which is under attack in court, in Congress and in many state legislatures. How much does this erode support for the health law?
