As 46 year old Gay man who has survived 28 surgeries and one near-death over 30 years due to hydrocephalus, plus over 28 years with HIV, I wanted to affirm the 9 Ways as you present them. As I have taken increasing ownership of creating change on issues important to me, being able to publicly tell my story in my own words–from geek to cognitively impaired to working on my second Master’s, from survivor of abuse to sex worker to loving partner, from drug addict to fitness nut–has helped others understand and agree with my agenda more than abstract examples and taglines. My winding, broken road has brought me to a place professionally where I can bring all of who I am to my work and from which I can plot a course towards revolutionizing hydrocephalus care for millions as a non-scientist.
Namaste.
David, thank you for telling this story. Amazing and courageous. I know it will inspire others and I am thrilled that you found inspiration in the 9 Ways.
