There is no American family more recognized in American history as the Kennedys. They sought to help the downtrodden and people with no voice in what has often been a sea of political turmoil. They have had their own personal trials and tribulations, but who hasn’t. Those issues were ironed out lawfully and they moved on. Why wouldn’t anyone want to pass healthcare reform now? It doesn’t even have to appear to be a victory for President Obama, It can simply be to honor the memory and signature issue of the late Senator Edward Kennedy.

    Dear Gloria,
I read with interest today Maureen Callahan’s commentary in the NY Post where you were quoted. As you know, the topic was the apparent incongruous nature of Ted Kennedy’s private treatment of women and his public support of feminist causes. I am curious if you have stopped to think that this man who sexually assaulted women, killed one, pursued women under the age of consent etc also supported our right to kill our own offspring so vigorously? There is nothing incongruent in this. He supported himself by allowing us to kill any babies that might come after a Teddy one-night stand.

Think about it! Abortion makes us murderers, whether we like it or not. Anyone who has held a little baby knows this to be true, in particular those of us who have held a 22-week old baby, or stared at one as it fights for its life in an incubator, or those of us who have suffered a miscarriage at 15 weeks and held that little baby in our hands, seeing clearly the gender and how the baby looks like its siblings. So beware the cads who want to “support” us by helping us kill our own after they have had their fun with us.

To the contrary, Nina, Kennedy’s position on reproductive rights respects a woman’s human right to her own life and the integrity of her body. An essential part of that is the right to make our own decisions about childbearing without government intervention and to be protected against discrimination if we choose to have a child or not to have a child–two sides of the same coin. You seem to think women lack the brains, hearts, and consciences to make their own decisions about these matters; in truth, women’s reasons for abortions are most usually because they value children so much that they want to bring them into the world when they can take good care of them. So I appreciate very much that Ted Kennedy supported policies that support women’s moral autonomy to make childbearing choices as well as policies that make available health care such as birth control services that prevent unintended pregnancies and help women plan wanted ones. These are the kinds of policies that save women’s lives every day. And he was a great champion for health care and social programs that saved so many children’s lives and health after they were born–something that most anti-choice members of Congress fail repeatedly to do.

As you could see by what I said to the Post, I don’t excuse Kennedy’s bad behavior at all. However, I’m sorry that they didn’t print the part of my response in which I also said that Kennedy’s later life had been a story of redemption. I’ll leave it up to a higher judge to weigh the scales of justice, but I think the good Kennedy did will far outweigh the bad.

    Dear Gloria,
I seem to think women lack the brains, hearts and conscience to make their own decisions…no. That honor falls to you and your cohort. You seem to think that women are so weak and stupid they cannot control their own bodies. Women are so captive to their emotions, if they want to have sex, they just cannot say no. And then, if it happens to be inconvenient to have a baby, well, then women are so cowardly that they should have the right to kill off the product of their weakness. That is what you tell us. Oh, you just can’t say no, honey, so go ahead, hop in bed with whomever, and then just kill that baby. Less than 3% of the over 1 million abortions in the US are reported to be the result of rape, incest or other violence. These are choices women make. Time for us to grow up, don’t you think?
And by the way, do you realize that since Roe v. Wade, over 16 million African -American children have been aborted? There are 36 million AA in the US pr the latest census. Does this qualify as genocide???

BTW, I am sorry the NYPost did not include all your comments, but I think we all experience that in interviews…:-)
    Appreciate the dialogue, too!
